He waves off his rescuers proclaiming "God will save me"....then angrily asks God why He didn't.......God answered : I sent 2 boats and a helicopter, what more did you want?. Jesus probably could save us, but we have to choose to save ourselves, through him/by the means of him. No auto saves. If someone refuses to follow Christ, they don't get saved. That is, the belief that people are able through “good works”, penance, isolation or whatever, to save their own soul. That would be false.

Jesus is the only ONE able to save us. One needs to turn the focus from himself to Him!
