Born in the USA

Born in the USA

Okay, did I hear right this morning on the news? Someone is challenging whether or not McCain can run for President, because he wasn’t born within the physical confines of the continental United States?

Oh, good grief.

John McCain was born on a US Military Base in the Panama Canal Zone, August, 1936.

To American citizen parents.

That makes him a natural born citizen!

Don’t believe me, check out the current U.S. Code.

The following shall be nationals and citizens of the United States at birth:
(c) a person born outside of the United States and its outlying possessions of parents both of whom are citizens of the United States and one of whom has had a residence in the United States or one of its outlying possessions, prior to the birth of such person.

I think this argument makes about as much sense as the crazy people that claim there’s no law requiring U.S. citizens to pay an income tax; there is (a law) by the way: It’s called the 16th Amendment to the Constitution. These are the same people who speak of disbanding the IRS.

Did Ron Paul come up with this?

  1. I don’t get the connection between the desire to eliminate the IRS and the notion that we aren’t obligated to pay taxes. The whole point of wanting to eliminate the IRS is precisely because citizens are legally obligated to pay income taxes. Actually, it isn’t the elimination of the IRS per se that counts, its the elimination of income tax (personal and corporate) that is really at hand. Personally I favor the Fair Tax or something similar.

  2. Well, if the tinfoil hatters can’t convince folks we shouldn’t pay taxes, the next step in their argument is that the IRS be disbanded. Which of course would make it hard to collect those taxes.

Kind of like if I don’t want to mow the grass. My wife keeps harping that she wants it mowed. When I see that my arguments about preserving nature aren’t working, my next step might be to “break” the mower. Then I can’t mow.

Now, if you do think you should pay your taxes, how do you propose to collect taxes without the IRS?
