Political White Noise: (Retrospective Part IV) How 90’s Style Apathy is Intended to Affect Your Vote Today
For those of you who are Republican the cost to our country’s national security, economy, and moral issues is as high as at any time. If you are thinking about staying home this fall, don’t fall victim to apathy. That is exactly what the Dems want.
I remember the latter days of the George HW Bush presidency. Apathy, indifference, and lethargy seemed to be the Republican sensibility at that time. A lot of it was due to negative media hype. George H.W. Bush seemed to be the kind of president a person couldn’t get excited about. A lot of people were throwing away their vote on a person like Ross Perot who couldn’t possibly win. And the Dems united behind their candidate Bill Clinton.
For eight years Americans lived under the Clinton presidency as he drastically reduced the military and closed down bases, while wasting our manpower on United Nations peacekeeping missions. He raised taxes. He put morally bankrupt judges on the bench, who believed the Constitution is a “plastic” document bending to the whims of the modern age, a document which can be reinterpreted by international precedents not according to America’s best interests. He and his wife tried to socialize medicine—trying to ruin one of the best medical systems on the planet—as well as making a mockery of the presidency. Oh, and while we’re thinking about it, you know that hopping economy that you are to this day told was in full swing during the Clinton presidency? It started before Clinton came to office and slowed down while he was in. Once the Dems are in office you can expect more of the same, and more support for ideas that weaken the stability of the family—like less school choice and more talk of legislation pushing gay marriage. Their understanding of things dictates that it is they who know what’s best for you.
All I can say, is if you don’t believe these things are good for our country, don’t stay home because you think it will punish the Republicans. You will only be ensuring that the Democrats have a chance to make a bigger mess of things. If Democrats come into power you can be certain that impeachment of the president and lots more pointless investigations will move forward—a waste of precious time and money. Don’t buy the political white noise you’re hearing right now.
For those of you who are Republicans, there are at least three ways Dems will try to get you to stay home.
1. Negative ads. As the campaign for the fall continues to crank on, you will be noticing lots of negative ads. It seems like anymore, such ads are the only way to get anyone’s attention. The thought behind this seems to be, if one rags on his opponent it will generate positive votes for his own side and get those who would typically vote for the opponent not to vote at all. It doesn’t matter which party you vote for, negative ads on both sides are here to stay, but don’t let them sway you from not voting.
Also, really know about your candidate. Some of the votes that they may have had to cast may not have been what you would have hoped, but sometimes there is also bad stuff tacked onto good bills. Look at the bigger picture.
2. Not only do Democrats know how to create negative ads (as pointed out, that goes for both sides), one thing that seems especially typical of the Democrat side is to whoop and holler in front of the cameras about what the Republicans—especially George Bush—are doing. They especially like to take anything the president does and tell you that whatever it is, it is bad for our country, and divisive. Don’t buy it. “Culture of corruption” are words that could describe a lot about American politics, but don’t buy the rosy picture that the Democrats are pure as the wind-driven snow. The dirty little secret of the Democrat side is that “Culture of Corruption” really describes the Democrats every bit as much as they say it describes Republicans.
3. The left wing media’s “negative energy” is a “white noise” distraction. The left wing media has a liberal agenda too. They want you to stay home. Therefore, they will slant stories about any Republicans negatively to make you angry. They may try to get you to believe that the Democrats are way up in the polls (whether or not they are) in hopes that you will stay home because you think your candidate is defeated. The media is also going to tell you again and again and again that we’ve lost the war . . . or that we’ve lost the battle for the hearts and minds of the people of the Middle East. To be honest, it is a difficult, complicated situation. However, we can’t afford to leave a failed state for terrorists to train and be nurtured. Terrorism is a plague on civilization. We fight a ruthless enemy. As a country, we must ruthlessly hunt it down wherever it goes. We must make sure terrorists never have a seconds’ rest, that they are worn ragged and destroyed on the battlefield, that whoever is left never has a chance to rebuild.
Just consider: we’ve captured Saddam. His sons are dead. How long did it take to get to Hitler? Oh, and how long was there an insurgency in Germany after the war? How long was it before we wore down the Soviet Union (a.k.a. The Evil Empire)? As history is being made, the media tries to repaint it before your very eyes. Don’t lose historical perspective. You can see things with your own eyes.
I would like to see more positive ads, where campaigners actually tell what their plan is for making a real difference. I would like to see all politicians on both sides of the aisle come up with a common sense (as opposed to elitist) vision and do what is best for the country. However, I am not of the opinion that at this juncture in American politics that is going to happen.
Don’t be surprised what you are hearing from the Democrats in this time of war. There was great opposition to various policies during World War II, and during the Civil War. This quote has gone around a lot lately, and I believe it was attributed to Abraham Lincoln: “The Constitution is not a suicide pact.” During times of war, sometimes liberties have to be put aside for the good of our country. We have to do what will protect the people of this country, for America is a shining city on a hill, and there are lots of enemies of America who wish to take the hill. Don’t waste your vote on a Libertarian. Don’t believe that “change” is always good. When people voted H.W. out of office, they wanted change, and the change they got was Bill Clinton. Don’t sit out this one; we can’t afford a Democratic congress. –Cal Samuel August
