Jonathan Krohn: “And a little child will lead them…”

Do you ever engage in a political conversation with your friends, family or even strangers? Do you ever wonder how in the hell they can actually believe the idiotic, "feel-good" rhetoric they spew? Well, I do, and I think these peoples' brains aren't fully functional. So, I think to myself, "maybe you just have greater discernment than other folks. Maybe you are just wise beyond your years." But, just when I give up hope for my fellow Americans, I see something like this, and I realize that even a 14 year-old has sense enough to "get it."

Take 5 minutes and watch this young man define conservatism better than any political candidate in recent memory. I promise, you won't regret it.

Wasting time with teabags and red letters

We've always been taught to believe that government has our best interests at heart–that our legislators represent us, and that the majority of Americans have a say in how government works.

But that view has fallen on hard times as more and more Americans are seeing just how Uncle Sam doesn't work. Or rather, how he has stopped working for Americans and started working for soft money, special interests, and corporate America.

This accompanying video is a representation of that view–a view which I share, by the way, and I'm not alone.

All across the U.S., Americans are displaying their outrage with teabags, of all things, and red letters. But what are we really accomplishing with these pitiful displays of our anger and dissatisfaction at our legislators? Our leaders already know that Americans' satisfaction  with the job they are doing is abysmal. They already know we disapprove of their multimillion dollar bailouts, of their obsequious gestures of goodwill, of their hypocrisy and of their willingness to represent whoever has the deepest pockets.

As you watch this video, consider what it's going to take to turn things around. It will demand more than a teabag, a stamp, and an envelope. My prediction is that as long as we are content to waste our time with these kinds of displays, things will continue as they always have.

In order to have an effect on how we are governed, we will have to adopt strategies which have an outcome that can be felt by our leaders in a meaningful way. That means total reform at the legislative level. We will have to find a way to beat the politickers at their own game. Since no one on the Hill has the backbone to do the right thing, most likely, we will have to find innovative ways to exert political pressure on our current legislators. Next, we will have to replace them with legislators who will enact the kind of reforms we need to substantially diminish the corruption of our system. That means, among other things, enacting term limits and campaign finance reform. We'll also need to systematically remove  corporate lobbyists, special interests, pork barrel spending, and soft money in any form. A watchdog group of American citizens will probably have to hold legislators accountable. Stiff penalties will follow for those who violate the law.

Is this little pipe dream of mine possible? Sure. Will it happen? Probably not. Once the political machine is in charge of holding itself accountable, it becomes self-perpetuating. It's a closed loop system, which ensures it's own survival by upholding the status quo. Reforming it will require unity on a national level and as long as the Party favorites are running the show, keeping us divided and distracted, the most we can expect from Americans is a red letter and/or a tea bag. Maybe, we would gather the courage to act in a pragmatic way, if we knew that our protests did little more than provide our lawmakers with a free beverage and cheap coaster to sit it on…but I doubt it.

WMD’s found in Iraq

Liberwocks continue to labor under an old but effective fiction: that there were no WMD’s in Iraq. The fact that political mythology of this kind is still believed by so many is the reason for this post.

A while ago I was blogging at another site when a liberal cosmonaut wandered in and left this witless comment.

“Bush killed many innocent and young soldiers when he said there was a need to fight in Iraq and Iran. The truth is both these countries never had nuclear weapons of any kind to be of any threat to any country including USA. He should be tried for failing Americans but he got away scott-free.”

The comment is especially entertaining, because it carries with it the message neoliberals wanted everyone to get. You see, they never came out and said there weren’t any WMD’s—just that none had been found. The implication was that since no weapons were found, there never were any to begin with. Makes perfect sense…if you’re a liberal. Anyway, the poor dunce who commented on my post just went ahead and stated “aloud” what the libtard powers that be wanted everyone to think. So, of course, I felt it my solemn duty to confuse him with the facts.

FACT: In June of 2006 the National Ground Intelligence Center, a Defense Department intelligence unit, released portions of a declassified report which stated unequivocally that "Since 2003, coalition forces have recovered approximately 500 weapons munitions which contain degraded mustard or sarin nerve agent."

FACT: In a January 2008 report on 60 minutes, top CIA operative George Piro revealed that Saddam Hussein had phased out his biological weapons program since the 90s but was willing to go to war with the U.S., because he needed to continue the illusion that he had an active WMD program, as a hedge against his arch enemy, Iran. He apparently had no idea that the U.S. was planning such an exhaustive offensive, or he would’ve reconsidered that strategy.

FACT: Saddam was planning on restarting his program on every level (nuclear and biological), approximately one year after U.N. sanctions were lifted. This explains why he was actively approaching North Africa for the procurement of yellow cake. This also explains why 550 metric tons of the stuff was removed from Iraq in 2008 courtesy of the United States of America.

What does it all mean? Well…it means that we can dispense with Bush bashing over the “no WMDs” hoax. There are plenty of other things to be pissed off about concerning Bush Jr, but his grounds for invasion ain't one of 'em. We can also dispense with the whole, “Bush should be tried for war crimes” BS as well. Long before Bush Jr was going to war, the same liberals who decried it, were agreeing with the intel and saying, "we have no choice but to take Hussein out." Well, I'll bet you won’t read that in The New York Times, will you?
